Naga Call Girls Find Hotspot in Dimapur

By Y Merina Chishi

nagaland prostitutes Dimapur, Oct 21  :
Garish makeup and gaudily clad women selling their bodies for survival are no more the way prostitution in Nagaland looks like.

Today there is a deluge of stylish, educated and urbane females in the trade.

These girls do it without the slightest hesitance or timidity- mostly in return for quick money. And their clients consists officers, businessmen, politicians, young students and even truckers.

A shocking revelation subsequent to an undercover act in Lahorijan has come out with some hair-rising facts about Naga girls.

Recently a group of undercover female social workers from Dimapur went to Lahorijan posing as call girls.

What they discovered in the hotels along the highway shows just how commercial sex work has become a profitable occupation for many young Naga girls.

Undercover ops reveal shocking reality

According to one of the undercover girls, they visited several restaurants after receiving information about prostitution racket in Lahorijan. On entering one hotel, a waiter approached them directly and without hesitation asked: “How much is you fees?”

The waiter told them since they were ‘novice’ and ‘fresh’, they could bargain for around Rs.1,500 per client. He also promised ‘condoms for protection.’ The girls pretended to negotiate but the waiter wouldn’t budge. Thereafter they moved to another hotel.

In another hotel, the undercover girls spotted one Naga girl negotiating prices with some ‘non-Naga’ clients. On seeing them, the girl pretended to have come up to attend a birthday party.

The undercover girls discovered that Naga girls prefer non-Naga clients; presumably for fear of being recognised.

Naga men who visit the restaurants also like to avoid Naga girls but prefer those from Manipur. The entire transaction before the meeting is reportedly carried out by the middlemen who work in the hotels. Some girls are also hired for late-night parties which often takes place in these hotels.

The undercover girls said that the hotels have small cottages behind the main restaurant which is used by the customers. “It has become a lucrative business for the hotels,” they said. The call girls reportedly earn at least Rs.500 per client of which 40% is given to the middlemen. They were told that ‘beautiful girls’ earn more. Most girls are school drop-outs, college going and hostlers from Dimapur. The girls, mostly teens or in their twenties, do it “just for fun and to earn quick money,” they were told.

Social workers have expressed concerns about health risks that the Naga girls are being exposed to. They also do not rule out bodily harm on the girls by some clients.

It may be noted that of late a multi-media message which shows four men from Assam stripping and molesting two Naga girls has been circulating around.

The men appear to be accusing the girls of being prostitutes. “The atmosphere is not good…there are possibilities such things are happening,” a worker said. In the past, there have also been reports of commercial sex workers from Dimapur who were brutally murdered and their body disposed in the tea gardens at Lahorijan.

Nagaland is faced with a deep crisis as more and more people are migrating from the rural into the urban towns.

For girls moving to the towns, sex work sometimes becomes the most lucrative business. Western influence and decline in moral values are also seen as the evils.

Surprisingly, many Naga girls come clean about the fact that they don’t mind casual sex in return for big money…they don’t think its prostitution, a social worker said.

KMSS Launches Movement Against Mega Dams in Northeast India

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti assam Guwahati, Oct 21 : Voluntary organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today announced beginning of an agitation programme from today with a signature campaign against the upcoming Northeast India mega dam projects. The campaign is designed to secure the approval of one lakh people to the memorandum being submitted to the Prime Minister on the issue after a week. The agitation may also go to the extent of sealing the electoral prospect of the Congress in the State, it warned.

The organization will start direct action plans with effect from November 1 next and it will culminate into a ‘vigorous’, movement.

Disclosing this at a press conference here, KMSS' secretary Akhil Gogoi said that the agitation is designed to be developed into a joint one with the involvement of all sections of the people and democratic organisations of the State and even the anti-dam peoples' movements of the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. It will not spare anyone siding with the mega-dam lobby and will also prevent drawing of the power grid line through Assam's territory, he warned.

He also demanded that the Congress-led Assam Government should spell out its stand on the mega- dam issue within a week's time. If the Assam Government's stand is found to be going against the interest of the State's people, the agitation will make it an electoral issue to ensure defeat of the Congress in the ensuing Assembly elections, he said.

For, Gogoi said, the latest statement made by Assam Chief Minister on the issue at a press conference in New Delhi exposes his mega-dam bias.

The KMSS secretary described the attitude of the Central Government on the issue as a 'neo-colonial' one. The Central Government is flagrantly violating the constitutional provision that made water a state subject. This stance of the Central Government is meant only to benefit the power lobby and big capitalist he alleged.

He also denounced the stand of the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister on the issue as anti-people. The present Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister 'has come to power with the help of the power lobby and hence he is to abide by its diktats,' alleged the KMSS secretary.

The mega-dam projects like the Ranganadi and Kopili in Northeast region and even a smaller dam Kurichu located in the neighbouring country Bhutan, have damaged habitations in the Assam districts of Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon and Lakhimpur, among others.

All these dams were given clearance by the Union Government without considering their adverse impacts on the environment and economy of the downstream areas, Gogoi alleged.

He demanded that the structures of the under construction Lower Subansiri Hydroelectic Project should be demolished and an independent commission be engaged to study the impacts of the existing hydel power projects of the region. This committee should comprise experts from Assam as well as from foreign countries, he said.

He warned that if the situation so demands, the anti-dam movement of the Assam people would be compelled to go for an economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh as the 'last resort' to mount pressure on the Arunachal as well as the Central Government for amending their respective stands on the issue in favour of the people of Assam.

However, the KMSS secretary clarified that his organization is not against hydel power projects. It wants the hydel projects to be micro-dam ones and run by the communities in a sustainable manner.

India Gets its 'No Driving' Day?

Get off the wheels for a day -- to battle pollution

Get off the wheels for a day -- to battle pollutionNoida, Oct 20 : A couple here who runs a news and information portal wants Indians to observe Jan 30 next year as 'no driving day'.

On that day, Ranjan Kaplish and Padma Pegu expect people to give up their sedentary habits and either walk or cycle down to nearby destinations and use public transport to reach faraway places.

This, they say, will help preserve precious fuel and conserve the environment.

The pair believes that this one small step taken by the people would go a long way in facilitating "societal transformation" necessary for sustainable development.

Get off the wheels for a day -- to battle pollution

According to the founders of the initiative, within a week of their call, at least 100 people from all over the country have committed themselves to the cause on their website Causebecause.com

To register, one has to go to the website and press the 'I commit' button, and share his/her name, email ID and vehicle number (the last one is optional).

According to Ranjan and Padma, the initiative is picking up not just on their website but on social media platforms as well.

For instance, at least 420 people on Twitter and 230 on Facebook are following the developments at CauseBecause.

Get off the wheels for a day -- to battle pollution

The idea struck the couple running a portal on 'development and sustainability' when the two were tossing ideas on how to evolve a concept that would involve the people at large.

Although last year's UN summit in Copenhagen that discussed climate change collapsed, many lesser-informed people around the world realised the significance of environment conservation and the harm of global warming.

Similar concepts have seen a success in South Korea, Malaysia and China, but participation was not voluntary in those countries, as those were government-enforced initiatives.

In India it is estimated that 70 percent of air pollution is caused by vehicles. Exhaust from vehicles has risen eight-fold over levels 20 years ago.

The green enthusiasts believe that such steps by civil society can make a difference.

Get off the wheels for a day -- to battle pollution

In November 2009, India revised its national ambient air quality standards and made them equivalent to the European level, exceeding even the standard prevalent in the US.

Nevertheless, air quality has been worsening in big cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

Ranjan Kaplish, who monitors his website closely, says: "If a considerable number of people commit, the day will also test the efficiency of the public transport system."

He says the campaign at present is being spread via word of mouth.

Get off the wheels for a day -- to battle pollution

"We are confident that as Jan 30 approaches, we'll be able to see near about 50,000 people committing to keep their vehicles off road," he says.

The comments made by individuals on the campaign are encouraging.

Meghna from Delhi says: "It's the least I can contribute as a citizen of this country."

Dasmesh Singh, Chandigarh, says: "It will be great to see roads with people either cycling or walking... though that seems like a dream."

Mizoram Tobacco Use Highest in India

By Vineeta Pandey

alt New Delhi, Oct 20
: Young Indians (between 20-34 years) pick up their first cigarette or bidi at 17.8 years and two in five tobacco-users in this group start smoking daily before they turn 18. Interestingly, almost 26% women start using tobacco before they turn 15, a health ministry survey said.

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (Gats) conducted by Mumbai-based International Institute of Population Sciences for the government also found that bidi smokers outnumber cigarette smokers in the country. This is because bidis are cheaper. So, if an urban cigarette-smoker incurs a monthly expenditure of Rs469, a bidi smoker has to shell out Rs92.50.

On an average, a cigarette-smoker burns up 6.2 sticks per day, while a bidi smoker burns up 11.6 sticks. About one-fourth of cigarette-smokers need more than 10 sticks per day, while more than half of bidi smokers use up more than 10 bidis per day.

Monthly expenditure on cigarettes is highest in Arunachal (Rs1,264.90) and lowest in Jharkhand (Rs181.70). The monthly expenditure on bidis is lowest in Bihar (Rs42.70) and highest in Rajasthan (Rs147.80).

The survey found that more than one-third (35%) of adults in India use tobacco in some form or the other. Among them, 21% use only smokeless tobacco, 9% only smoke and 5% smoke and chew tobacco. Around 48% of men and 20.3% of women use tobacco in more than one form. Smoking is not very popular among women (only 3% do so) compared to 24.3% men.

However, other tobacco products are a hit with 18% of women and 33 % men.

More than 75% of people addicted to tobacco products use it daily. Among daily tobacco users, 60.2% smoked tobacco within half-an-hour of waking up. This was in various forms like cigarette, bidi, gutka, khaini etc. Among minors (age 15-17), 9.6% consumed tobacco in some form. Around 52.3% adults were exposed to second-hand smoke at home and 29% at public places (in public transport and restaurants).

Tobacco use was found to be highest in Mizoram (67%) and lowest in Goa (9%). Interestingly, in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram, tobacco was more used by women than men.

The Gats survey was carried out in urban and rural areas of 29 states and union territories. A total of 69,296 adults aged 15 and above were polled. Of these, 33,767 were men and 35,529 were women.
