How Adele Is Like a Modern Kurt Cobain was 'authentic,' too, and it led to lame copycats: Mike Doherty

By Evann Gastaldo

There's no question that Adele is the reigning queen of pop music, and she's frequently hailed for her "authenticity"—much as Kurt Cobain was two decades ago.

But that "early ‘90s fetishization of authenticity" led to a bunch of "dour, humorless copycats" who only brought us "wave after wave of angst-soaked grunge and grunge-lite," writes Mike Doherty in Salon.

(See: Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Creed, Nickelback, etc.) Adele's popularity could inspire the same trend, Doherty worries.

Despite the fact that Adele's genre of music has been dubbed The New Boring in her native England, many others are following suit; consider that even dance-pop stars like Katy Perry have delivered their own earnest covers of Adele's "Someone Like You."

"Authenticity is as much a pose as it is a state of being, but we’re conditioned to value it nonetheless," Doherty writes.

The problem is, sometimes "authenticity" tends not to allow irony or humor.

Adele certainly seems to be ushering in "a new era where displays of 'authenticity' will be de rigueur," Doherty writes. "Let’s just hope it doesn’t do away with fun." Click for the full column.

Singer Whitney Houston Dies at 48

Whitney Houston sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career. Whitney Houston sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career.

  • Representative: Singer Whitney Houston has died at age 48
  • She sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos
  • The entertainer has struggled with addiction problems

  • Legendary pop singer Whitney Houston has died at age 48, representative Kristen Foster said Saturday night.

The cause of death and where she died were not immediately known.
According to her official website, Houston, who struggled with addiction problems over the years, sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career.

Houston was set to appear in this year's "Sparkle," a remake of the 1976 hit, which was loosely based on the story of The Supremes. It was her first movie role since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife."

Her body of work includes seven straight Billboard No. 1 hits in the 1980s, including "Saving All My Love for You," "Greatest Love of All" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go." Billboard puts her soundtrack to the movie "The Bodyguard" as one of the top 10 biggest-selling albums of all time. She also starred in the film.
The daughter of singer Cissy Houston, Whitney was born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey. Famed music producer Clive Davis reportedly spotted Houston 20 years later in a New York nightclub, signing her on the spot, according to her website.

Her rendition of the national anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl, days into the first Persian Gulf War, earned raves and cemented her place in the American musical landscape.

After "The Bodyguard," Houston went on to appear in several more films in the 1990s, including "Waiting to Exhale."

In 2000, Houston earned her sixth Grammy for best female R&B performance and, a month later, she was named female artist of the decade at the "Soul Train" Music Awards.

Her career stalled, however, in subsequent years as she entered rehab for addiction problems.

In May 2011, Houston got help for her much-publicized struggle with drugs and alcohol, her representative said at the time.

Does FoxNews Have The Sexiest Anchors? You Be The Judge

    By Carl Williott

Conventional wisdom dictates that Fox News hires the most "talented" on-air female anchors. The network seems to draw on an apparently limitless supply of perky blonde vessels to spout right-leaning siren songs about imminent disaster and financial collapse.
But does Fox News actually have the hottest anchors, or is this just one of those accepted social "facts" that aren't really true? This being a critical election year, we cannot abide vague assumptions; we must find hard truths. So as stewards of the media, it is our responsibility to get to the bottom of this pressing issue.
We worked tirelessly, planting ourselves in front of the TV with a couple six packs, flipping between the news networks on mute. After hours of rigorously objectifying, we stumbled upon a shocking finding: Rupert Murdoch's news channel does not have the highest number of hot anchors. Nope, that title goes to Bloomberg TV. Looks like New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg knows how to pick 'em. MSNBC, on the other hand, really needs to pick up the pace.
Below, you'll find the 36 sources for our painstaking research. Media is the fourth pillar of democracy, and these anchor ladies give us a fifth pillar (in our pants).

A new online petition, titled “
No More Kardashian,” calls for E! to boot the family from the airwaves, and ABC News reports that as of yesterday, 70,601 had signed (it's up to 111,000 as of this posting).

Mila Kunis Dubbed Knockout of the Year by GQ

She sparred onscreen with Justin Timberlake and sizzled alongside Natalie Portman, and now Mila Kunis is finally being honoured for her beauty and talent.

The 28-year-old actress has been named Knockout of the Year in GQ magazine's annual Men of the Year issue.

In her photograph, the sultry star looks dangerous and alluring in a revealing pink bikini top and black shrug.

Next up for the single star, who was once rumoured to have been seeing co-star Friends With Benefits co-star Timberlake, is the Muppets movie.

She makes a cameo appearance in the film, which stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Rashida Jones.

She is also starring in Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's directorial debut, Ted, alongside Mark Wahlberg.

Kunis is currently the voice of Meg, the annoying Griffin family daughter in Family Guy.

She isn't the only star to be honoured in GQ, of course. X-Men: Origins star Michael Fassbender was dubbed a Breakout star by the magazine, while Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon won the Showmen title.

Father-to-be Jay-Z, however, received the best award: he has been dubbed 'King' of the year.

In his interview with the men's magazine, the 41-year-old rapper talks about his wife and how he plans on raising his unborn child.

On announcing wife Beyonce's pregnancy at the VMA's this year, he said: 'It was actually Bey who wanted to [announce] it. You want to be in control of your life.'

Given that both he and his wife are musicians, it isn't surprising that he'd want his child to appreciate what he does for a living.
