Buboo Kakati Unravels The Big Apple's Secrets

By Arthur J Pais

buboo kakati New York, Feb 9 : "I chose to live in New York which I consider the centre of the universe," says Buboo Kakati, best known for her research for the Secrets of New York series, produced by New York City TV and being shown on PBS in many states.

There are endless stories in the Big Apple that are intriguing and life affirming, and a filmmaker, writer or artist can never run short of material, she affirms.

She should know -- the writer, director, editor and producer of documentaries has 23 Emmy nominations to her credit, and a win in the research section.

Kakati, who is working on a screenplay based on Thrity Umrigar's novel The Space Between Us, says though she has been influenced by the cinema of Vittorio De Sica and Luchino Visconti, she is also beholden to the populist narrative films she watched growing up in India.

'My background as an Indian and as someone who is also very entrenched in American society,' she said in a statement, 'informs my work whether directly or indirectly.'

Each episode of Secrets of New York takes about three months to research, produce and direct, she says.

"I get to read and hear wonderful stories in the media or from people," she notes, "The stories are wonderful but unless they are solidly researched, they are not going to come out well on the screen."

Often, she gets help from top professionals like Pulitzer Prize-winning city historian Mike Wallace.

"I have been to places in New York that most people just cannot go to," Kakati says. For instance, for an episode about the Hindenburg disaster, she went up with her team in the MetLife blimp and circled the city.

For a show on New York's century-old subway system, Kakati went to rail yards where subway cars are fixed. She rode on a 30-ton crane that picks up an entire subway car and puts it on the axle.

Assam Govt Seeks to Train Unemployed Youth in Other States

By R. Yegya Narayanan

Coimbatore, Jan 14 : The sheer distance from Assam to Tamil Nadu has not deterred it from approaching the Tamil Nadu Government in identifying companies that would be willing to impart training to unemployed youths from that State to start industrial units in Assam.

Over 20 members of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association (Siema), Coimbatore, have expressed their willingness to provide training, including ITI qualified, diploma engineers and engineering graduates, some of whom may even find jobs here after training, according to Mr Jayakumar Ramdass, President, Siema.

He told Business Line that the Assam Government has decided to approach other States, including Tamil Nadu, for providing training to qualified unemployed youths from that State under the “Chief Minister's Self Employment Scheme” (under the Assam Bikash Yojana).

The Government has planned to send the youth as apprentices for six months training to other industrially developed States for which the Assam Government would provide a stipend of Rs 4,500 a month to each trainee.

The Director of Industries and Commerce of the Tamil Nadu Government has asked the District Industries Centres (DICs) of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Karur, Erode and Virudhunagar districts to identify manufacturing units that were ready to offer training.

Mr Ramdass said the request has drawn an enthusiastic response from about 20 members of Siema.

The Siema President said the members' response for the ITI qualified personnel reflected the acute shortage in the availability of ITI trained people in Coimbatore. Companies in foundry, pumps, textile and auto component manufacturing sectors were in dire need of ITI qualified people for jobs such as electricians, fitters and so on.

He said another reason for the good response from the industrial units for training people from Assam was that ‘work-wise, people from the Northeast are very good.' If the companies found the trainees suitable and if those trained were willing, they could even settle down in jobs in Coimbatore itself.
