Naga Students Worried Over Naga Links in Chennai Sex Trade

15155199

Dimapur, Jul 10
: The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) has expressed concern over the recent arrest of 14 women from the northeastern state for being allegedly involved in sex trade that was run by a Korean national at Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

"We fear that this is just the tip of an iceberg," the NSF said in a statement signed by its president, Kelhouneizo Yhome, and assistant general secretary, Tongpang Ozukum.

The Korean man, Park Ju Dei, was arrested for running the prostitution racket under the guise of a hotel-cum-bar at Nemili near Sriperumbudur. Seven Korean business executive were also rounded up when authorities stormed the hotel, but were let off with a warning.

An agency report quoted Sriperumpudur DSP Balasubramaniyam as saying that Ju Dei had among his clientele many top-ranking executives of various Korean firms. The arrested women were sent to welfare homes in Chennai.

Ju Dei had been running the racket for at least two years and along with him, five persons - who were drivers and office assistants - were also rounded up during the raid, police said. The building looked like a hotel-cum-bar at the ground floor, beyond which the public had never been allowed to proceed, police said.

Following all this, the NSF has urged all Naga organizations in metropolitan cities to be vigilant and take stringent action against those found involved in "such shemaful acts".

Appreciating the "watchful act" of the Naga Students' Union's Chennai unit, the NSF urged all Nagas living in Chennai to identify the persons or agents who were involved in the sex racket and "punish them to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future again".

Incidentally, this is not the first time that women from Nagaland have been found trafficked to outside the state and forced into prostitution. Last year, six girls from Nagaland and five from Mizoram were rescued by the Goa Police when they raided a beauty parlour in the Porvorim area. The owner of the parlour, , along with four traffickers, were subsequently arrested for forcing the girls into flesh trade.

Barely a couple of days ago, a Dimapur-based Hoho of Naga women said while recruiting any woman for employment outside the state, private companies or agencies should inform it. The Hoho observed that this decision was aimed at curbing trafficking of women from the northeastern state.

Besides Nagaland, Mizoram authorities are also concerned over trafficking of girls from the state. Recently, police from the state rescued four Mizo girls, who were trafficked and forced into the flesh trade in Mumbai.

Satyawati College wrote to the university, saying the admission of the two students from Manipur should be cancelled.

"Two students from Manipur took admission under ST category. After admission, while we were cross-checking, we found they have failed in their last qualifying exams and their marksheets submitted during the admission are fake," said a member of its admission committee.

Maternal Mortality

Guwahati, Jul 10
: After all the gory reports on how female feticide and crime against of women in UP, Bihar and Rajasthan, here comes the shocker.

A recent report on Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) released by the Centre puts Assam as the top state with maternal mortatlity. Lack of nourishment and care for the would-be mother, sanitation and hygiene are a few reasons owing to the shameful statistics.

"A few states have always been in media focus for mistreating women and the girl child. This notion has further been fuelled by TV soaps and sensational tabloids. States like West Bengal and Assam has set fine examples of an equal society. But with the latest statistics, Assam has to rethink the way it treats it girl child," says Dr Malti Barua, a leading gynecologist in Assam.

Against the national average of 212, MMR in Assam is 390, the highest in the country.

The number is way higher than states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa and Rajasthan. The only silver lining in the bulletin is that MMR in Assam has declined from 480 (during 2004-2006) period to 390 (during 2007-2009).

Mizos Should Strive For Greater Autonomy:Lalduhoma

duhomaAizawl, Jul 8 : Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) chief Lalduhoma on Thursday said the Mizo Peace Accord signed in 1986 neither healed the wounds of Mizoram nor did it fulfill the aspirations of people even after 25 years of signing of the agreement.

Speaking during a discussion on an official resolution over the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Accord, Lalduhoma said the Mizos, irrespective of political affiliations, should strive for greater autonomy, including self-determination, in accordance with the United Nations Declaration of Rights For the Indigenous People.

He added that as India was one of the signatories of the UN declaration, the Mizos can take non-violent steps to achieve greater autonomy. "As India is the land of satyagraha, the Mizos should struggle for the highest autonomy possible," he said. The ZNP chief added that just depending on the financial assistance at the whims of the Centre could trigger another disturbance in the state as people may feel dissatisfied.

The former Lok Sabha member and Indian Police Service (IPS) officer said people can now claim their rights under the UN declaration and that all their aspirations, which the Mizo Accord couldn't fulfill, should be attained through a non-violent mass movement.

"The Mizo Accord was signed between the Centre and the erstwhile Mizo National Front (MNF) without consulting the people of Mizoram and political parties," he said. He added that people should be consulted if greater political autonomy was sought.

Saying that chief minister Lal Thanhawla's vacating of the chief minister's seat in 1986 was inevitable and not voluntary as stated by some Congress legislators as Mizoram was then to be upgraded from Union Territory status to a state, which required dissolution of the assembly and formation of a new one.

He urged all political parties to refrain from using militants to garner votes during elections as this kind of activity is detrimental to maintenance of peace and tranquility.

Parliamentary affairs minister Lalsawta, who moved the resolution, and speaker R Romawia, censured Lalduhoma for his speech inside the assembly, accusing him of trying to instigate a policy to achieve extra-constitutional position for Mizoram. "It is a dangerous propaganda," said Lalsawta, while winding up the discussion on the official resolution. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the house.

Bristol Palin On 'The View': 'That's Why It's Called Losing Your Virginity'

Bristol Palin The View Virginity

During an appearance on ABC's "The View" on Thursday, Bristol Palin was asked by Barbara Walters about her suggestion that Levi Johnston, her ex-boyfriend and father of her son, stole her virginity.

Walters presented the question in the context of what Palin says about having sex for the first time in her recently released memoir Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far.

"I'm not accusing him of date rape or anything with that," said the 20-year-old daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. "I just use that analogy of losing your virginity. That's why it's called losing your virginity."

She later added, "If I wasn't drunk, no that night wouldn't have happened."

The AP relays background on the matter:

Bristol Palin writes in her new book of losing her virginity to boyfriend Levi Johnston on a camping trip after getting drunk for the first time on too many wine coolers.

She awoke in her tent, alone, with no memories of what had happened as Johnston "talked with his friends on the other side of the canvas." She had vowed to wait until marriage. And she had lied to her parents about where she was going.

Asked about her mother's political ambitions for 2012, Palin wouldn't let any details slip.

Luke Rodgers Goal: Red Bulls Player Scores Incredible Goal Against Toronto FC

Luke Rodgers Goal

It may have not been better than Darlington Nagbe's goal this past weekend, but New York Red Bulls forward Luke Rodgers definitely deserves a lot of credit for this one.

In the 37th minute of New York's match against Toronto FC on Wednesday night, Rodgers received a pass and juggled it off his left foot. He then nailed it in mid-air with an incredible volley and the ball flew by Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei to put the Red Bulls up 2-0. New York went on to win 5-0.
