Five Biggest Nuclear Reactors in The World

Nuclear energy era was born in 1942.

The era of nuclear energy dawned in 1942 after scientists at the University of Chicago successfully tested the world's first nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1.

Although the era of nuclear energy began in 1942, it was only in the 1950s that commercial nuclear power stations started operation.

Today, there are more than 440 commercial nuclear power reactors operating in 30 countries, with 377,000 MWe (megawatts electrical) of total capacity, providing about 14 per cent of the world's electricity.

Around 56 countries operate a total of 250 research reactors and 180 nuclear reactors power about 140 ships and submarines.

Here is a look at five biggest nuclear reactors in the world based on their electricity generation capacity.

Kashiwazaki-Kariwa provides electricity to 16 million houses.

1: Kashiwazaki-Kariwa: 8,212 MWe

Japan's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa reactors are not big enough individually to break any records, but their combined output puts them on top of the ranking.

The plant, which was completed in 1997, has seven reactors, with a combined electrical output of 8,212 megawatts.

That is enough to provide electricity to more than 16 million Japanese households each year.

Chooz B1 and B2 generate five per cent of France's energy needs.

2: Chooz B1 and 2: 1,500 MWe

France's nuclear reactor Chooz A went out of operation in 1991 after 22 years of electricity generation, but Chooz B1 and Chooz B2 continue to be in operation.

Although the reactors were originally designed to generate 1,450 megawatts of electricity, the output was later upgraded to 1,500 megawatts.

With such a massive output, Chooz B1 and 2 are easily one of the biggest reactors in the world, generating more than 5 percent of France's total nuclear power.

Civaux 1 and Civaux 2 cost $4.1 billion to construct.

3: Civaux 1 and 2: 1,495 MWe

France has 59 nuclear reactors producing 76 per cent of France's total electricity requirements, and two reactors located in the city of Civaux are among the biggest in the country.

Civaux 1 and Civaux 2, which cost about $4.1 billion to build, became fully operational in 1999.

Turbines weigh about 3,000 tonnes and are more than half a football field in length, which shows how Civaux reactors are able to produce 1,495 megawatts of electricity.

Brokdorf reactor is the biggest in Germany.

4. Brokdorf: 1,410 MWe

The Brokdorf reactor, located near the municipality of Brokdorf in Germany, stores more than 110 tonnes of uranium.

When the construction began on the plant in 1981, there were huge protests by anti-nuclear groups, but by 1986, the plant was fully operating.

In terms of output, it was the world leader in 1992 and 2005.

It is currently producing 1,410 megawatts of electricity, but it can once again become the world leader before its scheduled decommissioning in 2018.

It is Germany's largest reactor and one of the largest in the world.

Isar I and Isar II power 1.5 million households.

5: Isar II: 1,400 MWe

Although nuclear power provides 20 per cent of Germany's electricity requirements, concerns over safety and waste storage have forced the government to shut down many reactors.

Isar I and 11, located in the Bavaria region, are also scheduled to be decommissioned. Both reactors provide electricity to more than 1.5 million households each year.

Isar II, which was commissioned in 1988, has a total capacity of 1,400 megawatts.

Naga Mothers Appeal To Rebel Groups To Shed No More Blood

naga mothers associationKohima, Mar 19 : Expressing concern over the prevailing inter-factional conflicts, the Naga Mothers' Association (NMA) today appealed to all Naga rebel groups to respect the Covenant of Reconciliation.

In a release issued here the NMA asked all the rebel groups to respect the commitment made by signing the Covenant of Reconciliation 'at this crucial time'.

''As mothers we reiterate our slogan ‘Shed no more blood’ and appeal to all our national workers to work together to bring peace to our land in the interest of our future generation,'' the release said.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organisation (ENPO) cautioned the warring Naga factions against hostilities in the ENPO areas.

The Organisation said in a note that it ''shall not extend any public cooperation to any faction or groups for non-compliance''.

The ENPO took exception to the reported factional clashes on March 17. It said the decision was taken in a recent meeting with a resolution not to have bloodshed, threat, intimidation or any form of violence within its jurisdiction, including Naga territories of Myanmar.

NC Hills Scam Accused Files Papers From Jail

Guwahati, Mar 18 : A prime accused in the multi-crore NC Hills scam case, Mohet Hojai, has filed his nomination papers from jail for the Assam Assembly elections representing a regional party.

On behalf of Hojai, his party Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) president Rathindra Thaosen submitted his nomination papers yesterday for the Haflong constituency. The ASDC is an ally of the main opposition Assam Gana Parishad (AGP).

Hojai, arrested in 2009, was charged in a court by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the N C Hills Autonomous District Council financial scam case. In its second chargesheet submitted in the court of the special judge in Guwahati on October 18, the NIA had stated that elected members of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) had siphoned off government funds to the proscribed Dima Halam Daogah-Jewel Garlosa faction (DHD-J).

Politician Mohet Hojai was among the 16 people chargesheeted by the NIA. The other accused include the then social welfare department deputy director R H Khan, contractor Jibangshu Paul and DHD-J chief Jewel Garolosa.

Hojai's candidature has been viewed by the ruling Congress as weakening the AGP's pledge to make the scam a poll issue against the Congress.

NC Hills scam accused files papers from jail

"The AGP has joined hands with the ASDC, which has nominated the prime accused in the scam as its candidate.

Thereby, the AGP is tacitly supporting the whole dirty game," a senior Congress leader asserted.

Turbines For Tripura Power Project Being Brought Via Bangladesh

power_turbinesAgartala, Mar 18 : Heavy turbines for state-owned ONGC's 726 MW power project in south Tripura are being brought to the state via Bangladesh. The turbines will be ferried from the Ashuganj river port in eastern Bangladesh to Tripura on big lorries, said an official here Friday.

The turbines will arrive next week to start generating electricity by this year-end.

'The over-dimensional heavy turbines would be carried from Ashuganj river port in Meghna river in eastern Bangladesh to Tripura on big lorries. The heavy consignments came to Ashuganj port last month by the water way from Haldia port in West Bengal,' an ONGC official told reporters.

He said India has developed a jetty in Ashuganj river port, 45 km from Agartala, and expanded the roads in Bangladesh and developed 31 bypasses across the border and inside Tripura to ferry the heavy equipments for the power project.

'The generation of electricity would start from the first unit (363 MW) of the power project, the biggest ever thermal power plant in northeast India, in December this year. The project would be fully operational by March next year,' the official said.

The state-owned ONGC's biggest power project is being commissioned in south Tripura's Palatana, about 60 km south of here, at a cost of Rs.9,000 crore.

The Bangladesh government had earlier agreed to allow India to use its waterways to transport the turbines and heavy machines for the power project, for which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone in October 2005.

The ONGC official said that carrying of the heavy equipment by surface within India through the mountainous northeastern states was extremely difficult. This led the Indian authorities to carry the machineries through Bangladesh.

'A consortium comprising of the US-based General Electric (GE) and India's state-run BHEL has been awarded contract to supply the all-important gas turbines for the thermal power project,' he added.

According to ONGC officials, the state-run Power Grid Corp of India Ltd (PGCIL), ONGC Tripura Power Co Ltd (OTPC), a new company formed for commissioning the project, and the northeastern states would set up a 660-km transmission line at a cost of Rs.1,771 crore to hook Palatana with the national grid at Bongaigaon in western Assam.

The much expected commissioning of the power project, a co-generation waste heat recovery power plant and ONGC's first major commercial project, has been delayed due to difficulties in transporting heavy turbines and machineries to south Tripura.

Billy Ray Cyrus: I Called Off My Divorce | Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus

Billy Ray, Miley and Tish Cyrus

How do you mend an achy breaky heart? Billy Ray Cyrus says he's doing everything he can.

"I've dropped the divorce," Cyrus, 49, said during an interview on The View scheduled to air on Friday. "I want to put my family back together …

Things are the best they've ever been."

"I feel like I got my Miley back in a way," he added during Thursday's taping. "I feel like we are the daddy and daughter that we were before Hannah Montana happened."

But the last few months have not been easy for Cyrus.

In October, he and wife Tish issued a joint statement announcing plans to end their 17-year marriage. A few months later, a startling video went viral of the couple's daughter, Miley, smoking natural herb salvia out of a bong.

Then, in an unguarded interview with GQ, he blamed Hannah Montana for "destroying my family," and said he felt Miley surrounded herself with people who put her "in a great deal of danger."

At the time, Billy Ray also told PEOPLE he was doing everything he could to find family unity again, saying in an exclusive statement, "It is very important to me to work on mending my family right now."

Even now, Cyrus still maintains his family would be in a better place if Miley didn't become a celebrity.

"I don't think Hannah Montana ruined my family ...," he said during the View taping Thursday. "Now fame, fame is a different animal. You've got to be careful with that thing."
