Aizawl, Feb 26 : Mizoram has witnessed a 23.48 per cent decrease in crime rate during January, compared to last year, police said.
According to DIG, (Nothern Range), L Hrangnawn, police registered 189 criminal cases during this year’s January, against 247 cases last year.
The DIG revealed this while delivering a speech at a crime review meeting held at police headquarters here today.
The meeting saw the presence of SPs, commandants and officials from state police.
Of the 189 cases registered last month, 132 were IPC cases while 57 were non-IPC cases.
The non-IPC cases, however, saw a slight increase from last year’s 41.
''The decrease in crime rate was due to constant vigil maintained by the police in all the district capitals and strategic locations during the New Year festival,'' the DIG said.
However, one CID case was registered during January, he said.
Three murder cases were registered during last January, which was the same as that of last year’s January.
The Mizoram police had registered 2,674 crime cases during 2008 while in the year 2009 the figure had come down to 2,661 with a 0.49 per cent decrease from 2008.
In the meantime, while divulging his satisfaction in nabbing criminals and handling cases, the DIG said that police should not forget its duty to maintain law and order.
''Safeguarding, lending a helping hand and solving people’s various problems are the duty of police. So, we have to work even harder in the coming days,'' the DIG said.
He also lauded the initiatives of NGOs, churches and police for a peaceful and cracker-free New Year celebration in the state.
''The people, NGOs and churches have played a major role in banning crackers and celebrating the New Year peacefully,'' the DIG added.
