NASA: No Sex On The International Space Station

INTERNATIONAL-SPACE-STATION-SEX-BAN You can forget joining the 200-mile high club.

NASA commander Alan Poindexter told a reporter who asked about "the consequences if astronauts boldly went where probably no others have been" that sexual intercourse is not permitted aboard the International Space Station.

"We are professionals," Poindexter said.

"We treat each other with respect and we have a great working relationship. Personal relationships are not [...] an issue," he explained. "We don't have them and we won't."

The question about sexual relations in space came after an April mission that put a record four women in orbit--the most women in space ever. Three women aboard the Discovery joined another women and four men aboard the International Space Station.

Take a tour inside the International Space Station via the video below. Even if NASA's policy were not in place, the close quarters could make intimacy difficult...

ARI Claims 24 Lives in Tripura

Respiratortract Agartala, Jun 29 : At least 24 people have lost their lives since the past fortnight following sudden spread of acute respiratory infection (ARI) in remote Kangrai hamlet under North Tripura along Tripura-Mizoram border.

Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty said according to hospital records, 24 people had died so far and 50 others were admitted with ARI complications, adding that there was a possibility of few more unrecorded deaths outside the hospital. Unofficial reports said 28 people, including 17 children, had died.

The minister said initial investigation revealed that the deaths occurred due to failure of the health officials to contain the disease in the area and village panchayats were also to be blamed for their careless attitude.

''We are giving our best efforts to control the situation and we have launched investigation into the cause of spread of the disease and all the accused authorities will be dealt with as per law,'' Mr Chakraborty said.

Leader of the opposition Ratan Lal Nath, who visited the affected area, meanwhile, alleged that treatment was being provided by quack doctors and the unidentified disease was posing to be a major threat to the patients with the health care officials totally at a loss.

''They did not organise a single health camp during the past one year in the area and no doctors visited the village,'' he complained, adding that the villagers fell victim to the disease as they had been suffering from malnutrition, which aggravated the respiratory complications.

Mr Nath underlined that the only source of income of the villagers was shifting cultivation and the MGNREGA work but the scheme had not been properly implemented. During the past three months they worked only for six days under MGNREGA, he added.

Assam’s Terror Victims Demand Justice

By Syed Zarir Hussain

blasts guwahati Guwahati, Jun 29 : Daisy Kalita is seething with anger and wants the harshest punishment for militants and leaders of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), almost begging that her husband’s killers should not go scot free.

“I don’t think they (ULFA) could be pardoned and should face severe punishment. Let the government not hurt our feelings by letting them go out without any punishment,” Daisy said as tears welled up in her eyes.

Daisy lost her husband Ajoy Kalita, a businessman, in March 2002 - he was shot dead by ULFA militants close their home in village Sarupeta in Barpeta district of western Assam.

“My son was just five years old when my husband was killed by them,” Daisy told IANS.

Manjubala Das of village Sorbhog in Barpeta district is equally distraught with the ULFA. Her husband Manik Das, a police constable, was shot dead in 2003 while on duty.

“I want justice and want the ULFA leaders to be punished so that we get some peace of mind,” said Manjubala.

About 15 families who lost their near ones to the ULFA in recent years met in Guwahati Monday and urged the government to deal with the jailed rebel leaders as per law - a clear reminder that they should not be let out of prison without trial.

The appeal comes at a time when there is talk of jailed ULFA leaders being released for furthering the political negotiations with New Delhi.

“We are not opposed to ULFA holding peace talks with the government. All we want is that their leaders should not go unpunished,” said Brojen Hazarika.

Brojen’s younger brother Kumud was taken hostage by ULFA militants and killed by chopping off his limbs and gouging his eyes before burying him in a pit in village Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district.

Barring ULFA’s elusive commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah, the entire top brass of the outfit is in jail. The imprisoned leaders include chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, deputy commander-in-chief Raju Baruah, self-styled foreign secretary Sasha Choudhury, finance secretary Chitrabon Hazarika, cultural secretary Pranati Deka, and ULFA political ideologue Bhimkanta Buragohain.

Two other leaders - ULFA vice chairman Pradip Gogoi and publicity chief Mithinga Daimary - are out on bail and currently engaged in drumming up public support for opening peace talks.

Mudslides, Floods: Northeast India Under Deluge

Animals flee, people marooned

- Rain submerges Kaziranga, Guwahati & districts; triggers mudslides in Shillong

Makeshift season: Students of Gauhati Commerce College tread gingerly on a row of benches on their waterlogged campus while a boy in Sivasagar uses a raft made of banana stems to collect firewood.

Guwahati, Jun 29 : Bonnet-deep in water, cars swam through inundated streets in Guwahati today as rain began its dance of devastation, partially submerging Kaziranga National Park, flooding villages in Dhubri and triggering fatal mudslides in neighboring Meghalaya.

While animals in Kaziranga raced towards the hills, chased by the rising waters, people in Guwahati had little choice but remain marooned in the waterlogged neighborhoods.

The situation is only likely to worsen with the weather department warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam and the other northeastern states during the next 24 hours.

Forest officials at Kaziranga in Upper Assam’s Jorhat said large swathes of the national park, especially the areas along the Brahmaputra, were flooded last night.

“Animals have started moving out of the park towards the adjacent Karbi Anglong hills to the south to escape the rising water,” a park official said.

The park authorities have already imposed Section 144 banning speeding vehicles on the stretch of National Highway 37 which passes through the national park. Every year, several animals are crushed under speeding wheels while fleeing the flooded park.

If Upper Assam struggled to save its animals, lower Assam fought to remain afloat.

Nearly 500 villages near the catchment areas of the Brahmaputra, particularly in Dhubri and Goalpara districts, were inundated.

All the tributaries of Brahmaputra, including Beki, Aie, Sankosh, Champabati, Gourang, Tipkai, Gadadhar and Gangadhar, have been flowing above the danger mark.

Officials in both Dhubri and Goalpara district administration said they were keeping a close watch on the rivers and rescue plans were in place.

The rising water level in several rain-fed rivers flowing from Bhutan flooded parts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa and destroyed paddy fields.

In Baksa, villages in Gobardhona were flooded after the embankment of Biki, which flows through the Manas National Park, broke.

A 35-year-old man, Kadam Ali, went missing when a boat capsized in Aie river in Chirang last evening.

Over 50 families from Simbargaon in Kokrajhar have been shifted to relief camps.

Villages were not the only sufferers, the capital city had its share of woes.

Continuous downpour since last night triggered artificial floods in several parts of the Guwahati, the worst-affected areas being Nabin Nagar, Lachit Nagar, Zoo Road and Anil Nagar.

Floodwaters also swept away several thatched houses in the Lachit Nagar area.

In neighbouring Meghalaya, a landslide, triggered by incessant rain killed a 14-year-old girl and injured six others at Bishnupur in Shillong.

Alica Arengh died when mud rushed down from a hillock around 7.30 this morning and buried the quarters of her father, Kamal Sangma, a constable.

Firemen rescued the other five occupants of the house but failed to save Alica.

Rainwater also flooded the hostel and other rooms of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Pologround, in Shillong.

Boys and girls who were being trained under SAI had to sit in the galleries in the morning because of the floods.

There are reports of a few houses being damaged in other parts of Shillong, including Gora Lane, Nongrim Hills and Lower Lumpering, by landslide.

The weather department said Meghalaya today recorded the highest rainfall, 133.8mm, so far this year.

The officials also said more rains might hit the state in the next few days.

Meteorological department officials said the southwest monsoon has become active during past 48 hours, with reports of widespread rainfall in many places from Saturday.

According to forecast issued by the department today, widespread rain and thundershowers would occur over northeastern states till July 1.

RBI to Fund Branches in The Northeast

By Suneeti Ahuja Kohli

rbi New Delhi, Jun 29 : To encourage banks to set up brick-and-mortar branches in the Northeast, the Reserve Bank of India has decided to part-finance the cost.

According to estimates of various bankers, Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh is the cost of opening a branch in the Northeast. There are 90 ‘unbanked’ blocks in India; around 80 are in the Northeast, the rest in Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar.

“This is part of the special package announced by the Reserve Bank. Banks have been asked to open branches falling in cities that have population between 2,000 and 5,000. Banks are expected to cover all the ‘unbanked’ areas in the country in the next three years. We have a plan and it would be worked out in phases,” said a senior official of a public-sector bank.

“Yes, this is one of experiments that we had initiated. We have already auctioned a few blocks in the northeastern region,” said the RBI spokesperson.

According to the Reserve Bank data, of the 600,000 habitations in the country, only 5 per cent or about 30,000 habitations have a commercial bank branch. Less than half the population, at 40 per cent, have bank accounts, and this ratio is much lower in the North-east. Debit card holders comprise only 13 per cent of the population and credit cards are used by 2 per cent.

“Even where bank accounts are claimed to have been opened, verification has shown that a significant portion of these accounts are dormant. Very few conduct any banking transactions and even fewer receive any credit.

Millions of people across the country are thereby denied the opportunity to harness their earning capacity and entrepreneurial talent, and are condemned to marginalisation and poverty,” RBI governor D Subbarao had said last week at an event in Hyderabad.

The regional spread of branches of scheduled commercial banks is skewed towards southern India.

Of the total bank branches in the country on June 2009, 28.1 per cent are in the southern part of the country, almost 20 per cent in the central part, 17 per cent in the north, 16 per cent in the east, 15.5 per cent in the west and a meager 2.7 per cent in the Northeast.

Football Fans in Shillong on Spending Spree

By Hempi D Henpilen

http://store.objectivo.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/f/i/file_8_24.jpgShillong, Jun 28 : Alongside the soccer fever touching new heights during the FIFA World Cup tournament, the cash registers at almost all the outlets of sports goods in Shillong are also ringing.

People in Shillong, also known as the Scotland of the East, are ardent enthusiasts of the game of football, on and off the field.

No wonder, apart from enjoying the telecast of the World Cup matches, these short but sturdy fans of the game are also busy buying the jerseys and T-shirts of their favourite teams.

Many store owners in Shillong said that the sales of sports merchandise have gone up by 14 to 15 per cent over the past ten days, courtesy, the FIFA World Cup 2010 tournament, presently staged in South Africa.

“We don’t have as much sales as compared to World Cup fever. So, when the World Cup starts, we see a total boom in sales. Whereas the World Cup fever is concerned, we have T-shirts and we have football boots, match balls,” said Karan Mordani proprietor, Adidas showroom.

“We are the only state in northeast who are completely sold out on the match ball because there is so much demand of these kinds of products. People are just crazy overfootball over here, especially for (during) World Cup. Teams like Brazil, Germany and Argentina, there are major fans. You can’t even imagine the kind of craze we have here,” he added.

On their part, the shopkeepers have stocked up jerseys of all teams, which have qualified for the World Cup.

Among these, the Brazilian and Argentine jerseys seem to be literally flying off the shelves Jerseys, balls, shoes are someof the merchandise sales, which have witnessed great demand.

“During the World Cup, football sales are very good. But there are not many customers in the evening as they are watching football. But soccer items are in high demand,” said R Mehdi, Manager, Reebok Stores, Shillong..

Football is slowly taking off in cricket-mad India and the World Cup is set to give the game a boost in a country with a 1.1 billion strong population.

Although India is placed at a lowly 133 in the official FIFA rankings, one notch below Fiji, but there is a huge following for soccer in the country, especially in northeastern states.

Poor Rain Creates Power Shortage in Meghalaya

http://travel.sulekha.com/india/meghalaya/shillong/photos/novel-rain-gear.jpgShillong, Jun 28 : Meghalaya is reeling under a power crisis, with its only hydel plant at Umiam on the outskirts of Shillong producing less than 30 per cent of its capacity due to less rain.

"The 185-MW Umiam Project is producing only about 57-59 MW. The demand for power in the state is over 550 MW," Power Minister A T Mondol told reporters.

The seasonal rainfall in Meghalaya, according to Met office, has been around 25 per cent less so far this season.

Mondol said the state currently is buying over 150 MW from PowerGrid but that is insufficient to meet the demand. The state spent Rs 223.87 crore to buy power last year.

The expenditure incurred during the dry season is high, with the state spending Rs 25 crore for the purpose in January last year.

The provisional average rate at which the power is bought during the year 2009-10 is Rs 2.97 per unit, while it was being sold at Rs 3.71 per unit. The state has a hydro-power potential of about 3,000 MW.

Meghalaya cabinet had recently approved a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to be signed with the state-run North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) for executing two power projects in Meghalaya.

The MoA for a 500 MW thermal power project in Garo Hills and the 85-MW Mawphu Stage-II hydel project will be signed shortly and the minister hoped that the power scene would improve once the projects come up.

Google To Set To Launch 'Google Me' Facebook Competitor

Is Google About to Launch a Facebook Killer? Kevin Rose Says So.

Should we brace ourselves for another round of tech news headlines with the word "killer" in them? According to Digg founder Kevin Rose, Google is about to launch a social profile service called, aptly, "Google Me." Rose stated on Twitter earlier today that he heard a "huge rumor" from a "very credible source" that Google is about to unveil what is apparently a Facebook competitor, no other details forthcoming.

While this is strange for so many reasons (since when do startup CEOs break such high-stakes "rumors" on Twitter?), we'd have to say that, if this isn't some kind of weird account hijacking and the rumor turns out to be true, we're not surprised nor should Facebook be fazed -- Google Buzz was supposed to compete with Twitter and we all know how that turned out. We do however have a few questions, namely has Google given up on Brazilian social network Orkut? At this point it seems as though the search company is just throwing social networking ventures against a wall and seeing what sticks.

We've reached out to both Kevin Rose and the Mountain View-based Google for comment and will update this post if they respond.
