  • Divers leap into Mexican mystical sink-hole
  • Event part of Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

It is a leap of faith not for the faint-hearted.

While dropping more than 27m into the heart of Mexico’s Yucatán jungle would terrify most of us, this root-covered sinkhole is a high diver’s dream.
The mystical setting close to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza was the latest stop on 2011 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

The event featured the world’s best athletes spectacularly diving into the mystical hole.

Believed to hold sacred powers, the 60m wide and 39m deep sinkhole is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was recently listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Pre-Colombian Maya sacrificed objects and human beings into the cenote as a form of worship to the Maya rain god Chaac.

Colombian cliff diving champion Orlando Duque was crowned the winner of the tournament, but more surprising, he managed to emerge with his trunks still on.

What Donald Trump's Investigators Into Obama's Birth Will Find in Hawaii

By Joshua Green

The path to Obama's birth certificate, as told by someone who's looked
Donald Trump - Joshua Roberts Reuters - banner.jpg

Donald Trump is making a big show of his sudden, flamboyant conversion to "birtherism"--the absurd belief that President Obama wasn't born in the United States. Trump has dispatched private investigators to Hawaii to look into Obama's origins, and he's getting plenty of mileage from an often-credulous media by insinuating darkly about what they're finding. Republican voters seem to like it.

Lost in this circus is that Trump is hardly the first Obama opponent to harbor these suspicions--or to act on them. The path his investigators are presumably taking is a well-trodden one. Others have already looked. And one of them agreed, on the condition of anonymity, to walk me through exactly what Trump's private eyes will find. Here's what I learned:

When you go to Hawaii to investigate Obama's birth, what you're looking to examine are public records. They're easy to find. Fly into the Honolulu airport, rent a car, and drive downtown to the state library. You can't miss it: it's practically in the shadow of the gold-leaf King Kamehameha statue in front of the Aliiolani Hale, the former palace. Once inside the library, head downstairs where they keep the microfilm. Obama was born (they tell us) on August 4, 1961, but you'll want the August 13, 1961 edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, because that's when the birth announcement appeared. When you've loaded up the film, flip to the back pages, to the section of the paper called "Vital Statistic." This is the record of births, marriages, and deaths provided by the Hawaii Department of Health's Bureau of Vital Statistics. When you get to Page B-6, scan down the lefthand column--there it is, toward the bottom:

Congratulations! You've located the birth announcement. Nothing indicates obvious Kenyan-Communist plotting or the nefarious handiwork of Bill Ayers. And the competing paper, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, also published an announcement. But you'll want to be diligent and investigate that address. So you'll head back upstairs and hunt down a copy of the Honolulu City Directory. Actually, because these documents are snapshots in time, you'll want the city directories from 1960 through 1962, to see if you can establish any pattern of movement.

After you've lugged them to a table, you'll find the address: it turns out to belong to the Dunhams, who are the parents of Ann Dunham, Obama's mother. If you keep looking, you'll also discover that Barack Obama Sr. is listed at a separate address, 625 11th Ave. in Kaimuki, close to the University of Hawaii. So you can surmise that Obama's parents may not have lived together. You can also find a newspaper article in which Barack Obama Sr. talks about how he is going to Harvard. A short while later, Obama's mother, Ann, returns to using her maiden name, Dunham, and several years after that, the parents divorce. And that's all you're going to find.

Obama was born at the Kapiolani Medical Center, where he (or more likely his mother) was issued a "certificate of live birth," the cat-nippy phrase that gets the birthers howling at the moon. You can visit the Kapiolani Medical Center. But you can't obtain a copy of Obama's certificate of live birth because the Federal Health Information Privacy Act of 1999, which protects medical records from public scrutiny, forbids it. The Obama campaign probably worsened the situation by releasing this copy of a certificate of live birth--worsened it because this is obviously only a copy (printed from a computer) and not the original. So the effect on the birther rumors was like the effect of steroids on Barry Bonds: it made everything bigger and uglier.

But the point is, that's it. That's the whole paper trail, all there is to find. My friend says you can do the entire investigation in a single day: Leave DC first thing in the morning, obtain the documents, and you'll still have time to sip a mai-tai on the beach before catching your flight home in the evening. He even went on Expedia and made me an itinerary: the whole trip would only cost $1228.40 (mai-tai not included). So, for me, the takeaway here is that Trump is a fool; he's getting robbed by his investigators, who are taking their sweet time in Hawaii; and he's not going to turn up anything. Also, I'm going to bring this surprisingly reasonably priced itinerary to my editor's attention and see if I can't wrangle an assignment.

Lurid revelations published in an Italian daily give a glimpse into Silvio Berlusconi's infamous "bunga bunga" parties.

In excerpts of police interviews conducted earlier this month and published in the Corriere della Sera daily, beauty queens Ambra Battilana and Chiara Danese described a night of debauchery at the playboy premier's Arcore mansion near Milan, involving topless dancing, stripteases and singing.

ITALY-POLITICS-BERLUSCONI

An Italian newspaper has revealed detals of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's "bunga bunga" parties.

Lawyers for Berlusconi, who is standing trial in a Milan court for paying for sex with an underage prostitute and abuse of power, rejected the report as "entirely without foundation," the ANSA news agency reported.

Ms Battilana and Ms Danese, both 19, told police they were invited to a "bunga bunga" party at the mansion on August 22, the report said.

Mr Berlusconi called the women in attendance "my girls," while they called him "Daddy" and sung "Thank God for Silvio."

After dinner, the 74-year-old said, "Are you ready to bunga bunga?" The women cried in unison, "Yes."

The women went on to describe the titillating game in stark detail, with Mr Berlusconi urging on the participants.

Ms Battilana and Ms Danese, who were due to compete in the Miss Italy pageant, said they did not want to take part, but were warned by a friend of Mr Berlusconi that they would not win the pageant if they left.

Mawi Store Opening- “The Perfect Party”

Mawi, Bip Ling and Daisy Lowe

Last Thursday was the hottest day of the year, and saw the hottest launch of the year too as we opened the doors of our debut Mawi flagship store on East London’s Calvert Avenue. Excitement had been running high amongst the local children who were convinced that the world’s greatest candy store was about to open; they were nearly right- the first ever Mawi store was launched with a ‘Fairground’ theme as a candy store for grown-ups!

The concept came from Mawi herself who wanted a theme that would reflect the fun, free, imaginative nature of her creative process. But it took curator Andres Ros and his ‘crack team’- Rea Kim, Jamie Bull, Albert Hauva and Marcida Rexhepaj to bring the idea to life.

Even if you weren’t there for the party itself, you can come and see the Mawi jewellery in this fun, fresh context too- the ‘Fairground’ will be open until Thursday 21st.

Under strings of coloured lights and vintage-style bunting, guests enjoyed fairground-worthy pink meringues and sparkly gingerbread lollipops from talented confectioner Lily Vanilli, yummy popcorn and bespoke Mawi Snow Queen Vodka cocktails mixed by Maddox. Mind-blowing hula hooping from ‘Marawa The Amazing‘, tarot card reading, Charleston Dancing from The Bee’s Knees and dream DJs Margot Bowman (of legendary London night “The How”) and longtime Mawi fan, Daisy Lowe, kept everyone entertained! The after-party was at Shoreditch House (of course) and our sincere thanks to their manager, Vanessa for being such a tolerant hostess…

We were delighted to celebrate this landmark in Mawi’s journey with so many friends and supporters (about 500 in all), not just from the fashion industry and not just the familiar East London crowd. We’ve never seen so many ‘beautiful people’ including  model of the moment Edie Campbell, Vogue.com’s Jade Parfitt, Jasmine Guinness, Polly Morgan- the art genius who made taxidermy cool, music legends Simon Harris and Roisin Murphy, Bip Ling and Daisy Lowe… all wearing Mawi in one place!

It was particularly fun to throw the party in East London- Mawi’s stomping ground for the past 10 years! We’re excited to be opening in a part of the city that has long been home to Mawi but which is currently and explosively making its mark as the most exciting and creative district on London’s map.

For the past 3 or 4 months preparing for this launch has been a 7 days a week, 24 hours a day labour of love. The team had to blow up hundreds of helium balloons, meticulously calculate how to suspend jewellery in mid-air, hunt for bears cool enough to wear Mawi jewellery and Linda Farrow sunglasses… someone even had to drive half-way to Scotland to collect the fairground machines from an Ebay lady who bizarrely and miraculously had all the bizarre things we’d been hunting for!

Everyday a steady stream of exciting and intriguing packages have been arriving at the Mawi studio, from mountains of pick-and-mix sweets to enormous rainbow-coloured gobstoppers, miles of bunting and hundreds of bouncy balls.

But as intense as the past few months have been, this is a dream that Mawi has been working up to for the past decade. It has taken patience, hard work and a lot of love to reach the point when it finally feels like the perfect moment. On the night itself one of the party goers said to Tim (Mawi’s husband and Managing Director of the brand), “When we spoke about this party 6 week ago you said this was going to be the perfect summer’s evening. How did you know?” Well, it just had to be…

Brig Thenphunga SailoAizawl, Apr 14 : Mizoram People's Conference patriarch Brig (rtd) T Sailo's eldest son Lalhmangaiha, a 61-year-old former bureaucrat, today took over as the new commander-in-chief of the party his father had founded 31 years ago.

Party sources said Lalhmangaiha defeated party’s official candidate and former minister Lalhmingthanga, who had acted as a working president of the party for some years.

Incidentally, Lalhmingthanga, 71, is a nephew of MPC supreme T Sailo. He was the Finance Minister of Mizoram People’s Conference (then People’s Conference) ministry during 1977-1984, and the right hand man of then chief minister T Sailo.

The MPC president-elect is a newcomer in politics, who joined his father’s party just a few months back, after he retired from government services.

The party also elected former assembly deputy speaker Vanlalhlana and sitting MPC legislator Lalthansanga as vice-president and treasurer respectively.

New Delhi, Apr 14 : The Delhi government on Wednesday rejected the Lancet report on presence of a drug-resistant superbug in city's tap waters but decided to distribute chlorine tablets to people free of cost as a precautionary measure against water-borne diseases.

A high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and attended by health experts of various agencies including National Centre for Disease Control decided to distribute the tablets to ensure that people do not contract any disease.

Representatives from MCD, NDMC and Delhi Jal Board, NCDC, Maulana Azad Medical College, Directorate of Health Services of Delhi government were present in the meeting. "There is no superbug in Delhi water. There is no reason to worry. The water being supplied is totally safe," said Dikshit, dispelling all concerns following the report by the international medical journal.

Health department officials said the government will distribute free chlorine tablets in its hospitals and dispensaries as water-borne diseases go up in the summer season. The Board will also supply chlorine tablets free of cost through its outlets.

The experts were unanimous in their opinion that there had not been any evidence of presence of drug resistance bacteria among cholera and diarrhoea patients and they continue to remain susceptible to the commonly used antibiotics.

Rejecting Lancet's findings of presence of NDM-1 gene in "cholera and dysentery causing bacteria in the samples of Delhi's tap water, the experts said there was no clinical and epidemiological evidence to support the claim.

"The experts were unanimous in their opinion that there had not been any evidence of increase in drug resistance in cholera and other diarrhoea causing bacteria and these continue to remain susceptible to the commonly used antibiotics," a joint statement issued by all participating agencies in the meeting said. Dikshit, who is also chairperson of B, said the water agency has been lifting around 400 water samples on a daily basis to check the quality of water.

Lancet had reported that deadly superbug NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase 1) producing bacteria were found in 51 out of 171 samples taken from water pools and two out of 50 tap water samples in the city.

BlackBerry Chief Walks Out Of Interview When Asked On India's Demand

Mike Lazaridis - Agencies

Mike Lazaridis

Toronto, Apr 14 : Research In Motion RIM founder Mike Lazaridis ordered a BBC reporter to stop the interview after he was asked questions about his problems with India and Middle East countries which are seeking access to BlackBerry enterprise emails in view of national security issues."That's just not fair," Mike Lazaridis shot back at BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones when he posed this question to the RIM co-CEO at a recent interview.

Looking sideways, a visibly upset RIM boss said, "First of all, we have no security problem. We've got the most secure platform. We've just been singled out because we're so successful around the world."

When the reporter asked whether he could assume that BlackBerry has no issues with India and Middle East countries, Lazaridis said, "No, we don't... we have just been singled because we are successful around the world. It is an iconic product, it used by businesses, it is used by celebrities, it is used by consumers, it is used by teenagers... we are
just singled out just because of our success."

When the reporter pressed him further on the India question, the BlackBerry chief said, "We are dealing with a lot of issues... we are doing our best to deal with the kind of expertise..."

The RIM co-CEO exploded when the reporter finally asked him whether he could 'confidently tell' and give 'assurance' to BBC listeners in India and the Middle East whether they could continue using the BlackBerry smart phone without any problems in future.

"The interview is over. You can't use that, Rory. It's just not fair. This is a national security issue. Turn that off," the BlackBerry boss told the reporter.

The BBC has posted the video of this portion of the interview on its web site.

The BBC interview followed Lazaridis's recent interview to the New York Times in which he slammed those who are writing off the BlackBerry maker as a 'broken brand'.

Though after many deadlines, RIM has given India access to its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), it has remained non-committal on allowing access to its encrypted corporate service.

India has more than a million BlackBerry users and RIM has set sights on the fast growing market as its share in the North American smart phone market shrinks.

The Canadian wireless giant, whose stock has slipped nearly 20 percent since last month after forecasts of a less-than-spectacular current quarter, is pinning its hopes on its PlayBook tablet due to hit markets in Canada and the US April 19.
