Emu Rearing Takes New Wings in Manipur

By Samudra Gupta Kashyap

emu rearing Manipur Imphal, Oct 22
: Poultry farmers in the remote hills of Manipur have found two new birds — Australian emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) and turkey — to enhance their income.

Many of them in the Senapati district of the hill state have already undergone training for rearing the two birds, with officials at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Hengbung near Kangpokpi now waiting for an incubator to arrive from Chennai so that they can produce chicks for supply to the trained farmers.

“The idea of opening an experimental farm for rearing emu and turkey struck when some of our veterinary experts went for training in Tamil Nadu two years ago. We launched the project last year,” said K S Paominlen, secretary, Foundation for Environment and Economic Development Services (FEEDS), the host institute for the KVK in the district.

Accordingly, KVK-Sylvan — as the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Hengbung, about 55 km north of Imphal, is called — has not only procured a number of birds from Chennai, but have also already carried out a series of training-cum-awareness programmes this year covering about 200 farmers. “At the moment we have 80 emus and 200 turkeys in our training-cum-demonstration farm, and farmers, who have been traditionally rearing chicken and ducks, keep visiting it in order to have a hands-on experience,” Paominlen said. The project is funded by ICAR through FEEDS.

“The emu chicks were three months old and weighed around three kg when brought to Hengbung in April last year. Each chick cost Rs 5,000. An emu will weigh anywhere between 25 and 30 kg in two year’s time and bring good returns for the rearer,” said N Muhindro Singh, subject-matter specialist for veterinary science at the KVK. A full-grown turkey would weigh up six to eight kg, he added.

Emus, interestingly, consume a lot of water and an adult can drink seven to ten litres of water in a day. They have to be fed thrice a day. “The investment will certainly be higher than rearing chicken. But compared to the investments, the returns will be much higher,” Singh informed.

Though people in the North Eastern region are yet to taste the meat of emu, Singh said it would not take much time

to develop this as the people in the region have been ntraditionally non-vegetarian in nature.

“While a local market is yet to be developed for emu meat, turkey is expected to pick up faster. Turkeys are already fetching between Rs 200 and Rs 250 per kg in Imphal,” Singh said.

Paominlen, on the other hand, has pinned hopes on National Highway 39 that links Hengbung to Imphal in the south and Kohima in the north. “Transporting the full-grown birds will not be a problem with the highway passing through Hengbung, and by the time we get the loans ready for the farmers, we also hope to develop a market in Guwahati,” he added.

Emu also has a much higher disease-resistance capacity when compared to other traditional poultry birds. Poultry-rearers in Manipur had suffered huge losses when bird flu broke out across the state three years ago.

FEEDS itself is a success story in its own way, being an NGO set up on 200 hectares of land donated by Palun Kipgen, a well-to-do resident of Hengbung over a decade ago.

The first major breakthrough, however, came when the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) sanctioned a Krishi Vigyan Kendra with FEEDS as the host NGO.

Having partnered with ICAR, IFAD and the state veterinary department, it today has a wide spectrum of activities including 70 hectares of tea plantation, 80 hectares under cardamom, and a sizeable area under medicinal and aromatic plants.

Indo-Bangla Set to Sign Pact on Border Haats

no-mans-land-indo-bangla-borderNew Delhi, Oct 22 : India and Bangladesh are set to sign pacts which would clear the decks for setting up of border haats between Meghalaya and the neighboring country.

Led by Commerce Minister of Bangladesh, Faruk Khan, a 21-member delegation arrived here late in the evening. The two countries are slated to sign an agreement to set up border haats, a traditional commodity market. Initially border haats are going to be started at two places along the international border at Sunamganj and Kurigram districts.

The trading will be held once a week in both the sides and an individual will not be able to trade above US $50 at the border haats. New Delhi has agreed not impose local tax on trading at the border.

The trading would be conducted in local currencies of the two nations. Farm and home made items produced within 10 Km radius of border haats would be traded at the markets to be set up within five Km of the international border.

The commodities to be traded in these haats include locally produced agriculture and horticulture products, spices, and minor forest products excluding timber, fresh and dry fish, dairy, fishery and poultry products, cottage industries items, wooden furniture and cane goods, handloom and handicraft items.

According to sources, issue of transition rights of goods to and from North-East via Bangladesh is likely to figure during the discussion. Entry of North-East bound trucks through Bangladesh is also likely to be discussed.

During the bilateral exchange between the visiting Commerce Minister and Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Anand Sharma, India would insist on implementation of the transition rights. While Bangladesh might raise the issue of waiver of duties and lifting of non-tariff trade barriers on garment exports.

On his arrival, the Bangladesh Commerce Minister told newsmen that, “I always say business with India is very important for Bangladesh.”

“We do business with neighbouring countries and are trying hard to increase trade, he said.

The Commerce Minister is joining a meeting of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) for an interactive session ahead of his meeting with Sharma on Saturday.

India's Malaria Deaths 13 Times Higher Than WHO Estimates

malaria in India London, Oct 21 : Malaria claims more than 200,000 lives in India every year, nearly 13 times higher than a "misleadingly low" UN estimate, a new study has claimed.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 15,000 people die of malarial each year. But the new report, published in the British medical journal The Lancet, said the numbers could be as high as 2,05,000 per year.

The upper limit is around 2,77,000 and the lower limit is nearly 1,25,000, it said.

Describing the WHO estimates as "misleadingly low" and "gross underestimation", the study pointed out that the UN agency takes into account only those deaths confirmed and recorded by hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

As many deaths occur at homes rather than in hospitals or clinics, the underlying cause of many malaria fatalities in India is likely to be misattributed, it noted.

It also said that the cases and deaths reported by the Indian Government are concentrated mainly in a few states in east and northeast India -- the so-called high-malaria states such as Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and the states in the far northeast of India.

"Because the Indian national malaria programme cures nearly all the cases it treats, it detects only about 1,000 malaria deaths each year, and misses most deaths caused by malaria," said the report, highlighting the estimating flaws.

The study deployed trained field workers who interviewed families or other respondents about each of 122,000 deaths during 2001—03 in 6,671 randomly selected areas across the country.
The field workers sent back reports on each case as well as answers to specific questions which were asked if the individual had died of a fever.

The data was then analysed separately by doctors, who gave their independent opinion of the underlying cause of death. A review board adjudicated in cases where there was a dispute.

Of the total number of deaths, 2,681 were found to be due to malaria. 90 per cent of these deaths had happened in rural areas and 86 per cent were not in health-care facility
"Death rates attributed to malaria", it said, "correlated geographically with local malaria transmission rates derived independently from the Indian malaria control programme".

Extrapolated nationwide, it was found that malaria killed 205,000 deaths every year before the age of 70, comprising 55,000 in early childhood, 30,000 between the age of five and 14 and 120,000 at ages 15 to 69, the report said.

Authors of the study said that their findings suggest that "the low WHO estimate of malaria deaths in India (and only 100,000 adult malaria deaths per year worldwide) should be reconsidered".

"If WHO estimates of malaria deaths in India or among adults worldwide are likely to be serious underestimates, this could substantially change disease control strategies, particularly in the rural parts of states with high malaria burden," they added.

Apple's Lightest MacBook Air

Inside Apple's lightest MacBook Air

Basking in the glory of the success of its tablet device iPads and mobile device iPhone, Apple has added some of their features to its computers.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled company's new ultra-light laptop MacBook Air which -- like its popular iPad -- has no hard drive. Also, Apple's popular App Store, available on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, too has come to Macintosh computers.

Introduced in two sizes, the new laptops aim to boost the company's falling share in the PC market. Here's looking inside Apple's just-launched MacBook Air.

Apple will bring a version of its mobile applications store to the Mac. The App Store for the Mac will go live within 90 days, and developers will be able to start submitting apps from next month. They will get 70 per cent of the revenue from sales. The original App Store debuted in 2008 and helped spur sales of the iPhone.
The Apple's App Store houses more than 250,000 apps and has generated over 7 billion downloads.

Police Chief in Mexican Town is a Student

Marisol Valles, 20, who is studying criminology, has yet to make an arrest but is being called Mexico's bravest woman

By Rory Carroll

She is a petite 20-year-old college student who paints her nails pink, has an infant son and believes in non-violence: meet Marisol Valles, the newest police chief in Mexico's drug war cauldron.

The town of Praxedis Guadalupe Guerrero on the Texas border has astonished Mexico by appointing Valles to head a police force in the heart of a traditional centre for narco-traffickers.

The criminology student has yet to make an arrest but has already been hailed Mexico's bravest woman for taking such a post in Juarez valley, a strip of about a dozen towns and villages where shadowy groups slaughter and mutilate police and civilians with impunity.

"The situation can improve if we believe in ourselves and believe there is hope," Valles told Reuters. "I want to carry this through and show that we can do this.

The town's mayor, Jose Luis Guerrero, said she was the most qualified of a handful of applicants for a job, which in many parts of Mexico is considered tantamount to a death sentence.

The new police chief heads a force of just 13 agents, nine of them women, with one working patrol car, three automatic rifles and a pistol. Gunmen killed a local official and his son last weekend as Valles prepared to start her job.

"We are doing this for a new generation of people who don't want to be afraid anymore. Everyone is frightened - it is very natural," she told Mexican media. "My motive for being here is that one can do a lot for the town ... we are going to make changes and get rid of a little of the fear in every person."

Her force would focus on a non-violent role of promoting values and principles and preventing crime, she added.

The appointment has upset some traditionalists - bloggers have asked if there are no men in the state of Chihuahua - and raised fresh questions about the state's capacity in an area that has seen an exodus of residents amid massacres, beheadings and home burnings.

Juarez valley, once a route for Apaches and outlaws such as Billy the Kid, has been a transit point for cartels transporting cocaine, cannabis and other drugs to the US, a stone's throw across the Rio Bravo.

The Sinaloa cartel is said to be waging an extermination campaign against homegrown Juarez cartel members in the valley. Analysts say rival narcos have used "plomo o plata" - lead or silver - to co-opt some police, army and politicians.

Aishwarya is Reigning Queen of Bollywood

Aishwarya in 2010: Number 1

By Piyali Dasgupta

Hrithik as Ramon Sampedro? Akshay Kumar as Benjamin Button? No way. I'd much rather watch Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (ARB) jiving and air-drumming. At 36, she is Bollywood's most bankable actor.

So 2010 didn't begin very well. Those pesky baby rumours surfaced again and left her angry and depressed. Pa Bachchan jumped to her defence and demanded an apology from the Mumbai tabloid for invading her personal space. Once that was settled, better things happened like the annual Cannes outing.

The heavily embroidered, sheer taupe sari paired with a sleeveless blouse, accentuated her stunning good looks. No red carpet faux paus - hair, make up, accessories, all were in perfect order.Aishwarya Rai in 2010

Alas, all good things must come to an end so Raavan came along. Among all things horribly wrong with Raavan, the one right thing was ARB.

She looked translucent, ethereal and carried off the barely made up look with aplomb and made up for it with heavy doses of unadulterated glamour in Endhiran/Robot.

From tribal to Egyptian and even Barbie, ARB was the perfect palette for make up man Ojas Rajani. For scale, think of Pri's futuristic look in Love Story 2050.

The red hair and the pink bear, ugh. That was just one look compared to ARB's several. So Endhiran/Robot raked in mega crores because it a Rajnikanth film which means it comes with a guarantee to strike gold. But if anyone can stand up to Rajni, it is ARB. Others would have been vanquished.

Back to ARB's forthcoming releases -Action Replayy and Guzaarish. I sincerely hope that reverse aging is all that's common to BB and AK. Vipul Shah has said Action Replayy is as Bollywood as it can get.

Fingers crossed, because a BB remake with a Holi song (even one picturised on ARB) would be as ghastly as ghastly can get.

There's a fair buzz on Guzaarish being "inspired" by the Spanish film Mar adentro (The Sea Inside). The 2004 Javier Bardem film is based on the relationships Ramon Sampedro shares with two women.

The former sailor has been quadriplegic for twenty-eight years and is fighting in court for his right of practicing euthanasia. For now, I am looking forward to ARB air-drumming (albeit with a smug look) and the phoney puffs she takes.

ARB can carry the weight of these films on her shoulder - sort of like Rajnikanth shooting bullets with his finger.

Meghalaya Govt Favors Academician as University VC

North Eastern Hill University Students Meghalaya Shillong, Oct 21 : Meghalaya government has asked a Union government team to appoint a local academician as vice chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) even as protesting students have set Oct 29 as the new deadline for removal of A.N. Rai from the post.

The three-member team of the union human resource development (HRD) ministry, which arrived Wednesday evening, left for New Delhi Thursday and will submit its report to the HRD minister Kabil Sibal.

The team studied the student protests over the appointment of Rai. Rai, a former vice chancellor of Mizoram University, was appointed by President Pratibha Patil after Pramod Tandon completed his tenure Sep 12.

The student community under, the banner of NEHU Students Union (NEHUSU) and Meghalaya Tribal Students Coordination Committee (MTSCC), want a tribal vice chancellor to head the varsity, one of the country's premier central universities.

Late Barrister Pakem was the only local vice chancellor since the university's inception in 1973.

The team, led by HRD secretary Vibha Puri Das, met the faculty and non-teaching staff of NEHU and students unions. Vice Chancellor Rai, accompanied by deans and other officials, also met the central officials.

'We have heard from the governor, the state government and stakeholders of NEHU. We will submit our report to the HRD minister,' Kumar told IANS, adding the minister will take a final decision to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, the students' unions criticised the fact-finding team for not visiting the university campus.

'We are amazed by the style and functioning of this team, whose main purpose was to look into the NEHU issue. How can they prepare a report when they have not even visited the campus,' Kynpham Kharlyngdoh, chairman of the Coordination Committee, told IANS.

Setting Oct 29 as new deadline for removal of Rai as vice chancellor, the student leader warned of launching massive protests in the campus.

'We will not accept Rai as our vice chancellor for his tainted credentials in Mizoram University. We will continue with our non-cooperation movement till the centre appoints a new vice chancellor,' he iterated.

But Rai has made it clear he will not bow down.

The Meghalaya government asked the HRD team to appoint a local academician as vice chancellor.

'David Syiemlieh (a tribal Khasi and an eminent historian) is the best person to lead the university. He is an impeccable academician with requisite qualifications and had enough experience in administration of the university,' Deputy Chief Minister B.M. Lanong said.

Syiemlieh, a member of Indian Council of Historical Research, is currently the controller of examinations in the university.
