Mizo Hooch Tragedy: 2 Dead, 30 Fall ill

Aizawl, May 22 : The death toll in hooch tragedy here remained two but the number of people taken ill due to consumption of spurious liquor rose to 30 today, officials said.

Aizawl Civil Hospital officials said one woman admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) remained critical, while the conditions of 13 people admitted to the hospital have improved. Seventeen people were discharged from hospital after medication.

Two persons died, while seven others fell ill after consuming spurious liquor in Aizawl yesterday.

Police said the origin of the spurious liquor was Rangvamual, near the city, from where hundreds of Myanmarese nationals engaged in manufacture and sale of illicit local brew were being evicted en masse by Young Mizo Association (YMA) as Mizoram is a dry state.

The suspect, a Myanmarese national, was yet to be arrested as she fled before the police could find her. The woman is on the YMA's list of foreign nationals selling 'zu' or local liquor.

As many as 57 people, including seven women, have died in Mizoram after consuming spurious liquor since February 20, 1997 when the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1995 was imposed in the state, officials said.
