OLD PLACE, NEW LOOK: Ratan Tata (L) (faced backward) says he is happy to be back in Assam.

Guwahati, Mar 12 : Ratan Tata with heads of industry attend the first meeting of the Assam Investment Board. Among them was Krishna Kumar, the man, who was in the eye of many storms between 1991 and 1997 as the then MD of TATA Tea.

Both Ratan Tata and Kumar seem to have left behind them the times of killings & kidnappings of company executives, when Tata was forced to pay ULFA militants. There was also the infamous funding of ULFA leader Pranati Deka's treatment at Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital that was exposed after her arrest.

"My visit today has been a real eye opener because Guwahati has changed. It's full of evidence of great development and prosperity. Certainly, which I do not recall it having when I was here last and I am very happy to be here today" said TATA Sons Chairman Ratan Tata.

Former TATA Tea employee Bolin Bordoloi, who was abducted and kept captive for 330 days in 1993, he may also believe in Assam's growth story.

"Tata has a soft corner for Assam. Having worked here for 37 years I know their ethical commitments," said Former TATA Tea employee Bolin Bordoloi.

By 2008, TATA Tea has scaled down their operations in Assam. Now, the foundation stone laying for Taj Vivanta, a 5 star hotel in Guwahati, signals a return. Guwahati has more to cheer for the first northeast branch of HSBC.

The 90s of extortion, allegations of funding terror outfits might be history, but TATA have surely checked into Assam once again.
