Guwahati, Feb 16 : Insurgency-related incidents in Manipur and Assam remained a major concern for the Centre as a recent report published by the Union Home Ministry revealed that number of incidents continued to increase in both the states of Northeast.
The report also suggested that there was a dramatic increase of insurgent activities in Tripura. Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have always remained at the bottom as far as insurgency was concerned.
The report also revealed that both Manipur and Assam had seen revival of insurgency-related incidents. In case of Assam, even as the cadres of different insurgent groups were surrendering or being arrested, the number of incidents remained very high and in fact had grown over the past few years.
There was almost ten per cent increase in such incidents in Assam, but that was attributed to more killings of terrorists in encounters with the security forces than the previous year, it said, adding in the last year, 194 terrorist were killed which was almost double than that of the previous year. In the last year, 22 security personnel were killed in comparison to 18 in the previous year.
''Manipur has remained a major problem for us and we are very much concerned about it,'' said Union Home Secretary G K Pillai while he was in Guwahati recently for North Eastern Council meeting.
Although 336 terrorists were killed in encounters with security personnel this year, a little less than last year's figure, as many as 81 civilians were also killed during the period.
Arunachal Pradesh had largely been a peaceful state, but with Naga militants increasing in Tirap district, the state was now facing rise in insurgency-related incidents, the report said, adding the positive point, however, was the figures were less.
